Ready to Host 1st International Chanthaburi Gems and Jewelry Festival 2019 in December
The Gems and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or GIT and its partners announced their readiness to host the 1st International Chanthaburi Gems and Jewelry Festival 2019, bringing together Thai and international entrepreneurs to exhibit their products and expand their business networks, while also featuring interesting activities to strengthen the status of Chanthaburi as the global City of Gems. The festival is expected to generate more than 27 million baht and attract at least 15,000 visitors.
At the press conference, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Mr.Weerasak Wangsuphakijkosol said the government is actively driving forward economic development and creating prosperity in provinces across the country. To cope with global instability, the public sector has introduced and implemented several measures to support the economic growth and improve the country’s competitiveness. The project to develop and promote Chanthaburi as the City of Gems is in line with the government’s policy as the gem and jewelry industry plays an important role in Thailand’s economy, serving as the third largest export income generator for the country, after automobiles and computers. When combined with domestic trade, the industry contributes around 1 trillion baht to the economy, accounting for 6% of GDP while creating more than 700,000 jobs, particularly in Chanthaburi, one of the most important global hubs for colored gemstones trade and production.
Mrs. Duangkamol Jiambutr, Director of GIT stated that Chanthaburi has been recognized as Thailand’s source of high-quality colored gemstones for more than 100 years. Currently, although its natural gemstones sources have been depleted, there are still large quantities of gemstones imported into Chanthaburi for treatment. Hence, the province is widely accepted as one of the global City of Gems and is an important trade and production center that attracts a large number of international traders annually. She added that as much as of 80% of colored gemstones worldwide have been circulated through Thailand — Chanthaburi in particular – to undergo cutting and quality enhancing processes.
GIT has been assigned by the Deputy Minister of Commerce to organize the project to develop and promote Chanthaburi as the City of Gems, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of local entrepreneurs and community enterprises in the gems and jewelry industry to become more competitive and equipped with the skills to tap into global markets as well as driving forward Thailand to become the global trading hub for gems and jewelry.
To reach this goal, GIT along with public and private organisations in Chanthaburi will jointly host the International Chanthaburi Gems and Jewelry Festival 2019 under the theme, “Power of Gemstones and Jewelry” from December 4 to 8, 2019 at various locations from the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Center, KP Jewelry Center, Gems Market at Srichan Road to the OTOP Lifestyle Shop.
“This festival will be a stage for international exhibitors — particularly from ASEAN countries — to showcase their gems and jewelry products, while wholesale traders and visitors can explore and purchase quality products from international producers,” GIT director said.
The festival will showcase 500 booths from exhibitors. Visitors can discover gems and jewelry and other relevant products including rough gemstones, cut gemstones, jewelry, jewelry parts, equipment & tools machinery and display & packaging.
“GIT expects that the five-day festival will generate at least 27 million baht in sales from both gems and jewelry trade and tourism while attracting around 15,000 visitors,” GIT directors added.
Moreover, the festival will feature interesting activities such as the award presentation ceremony for “GIT’s 13th World Design Awards 2019”, “Gems Faceting Master Challenge 2019” and “Gem and Jewelry Research Proposal Competition”, gem auctions and seminars on gem and jewelry. Five special exhibitions will also be presented as follow;
- Jewelry Design Gallery displaying product prototypes under the GEMS TREASURE Project 2018-2019 and other works from 15 participating provinces.
- Smart Jewelers Exhibition showing products from selected artisans and entrepreneurs.
- Innovative Jewelry displaying innovative jewelry from GIT’s members.
- New Heritage exhibiting contemporary faceting and jewelry-making by the heirs of famous artisans.
- Innovative Lifestyle Jewelry displaying lifestyle jewelry and accessories for everyday use created by young designers and students of GIT’s Training Center.
Vice Governor of Chanthaburi province, Mr. Pongpat Wongtrakul said that both the public and private sectors in Chanthaburi are jointly promoting Chanthaburi as the City of Gems and as one of the world’s important trading and production center for colored gemstones. Festival visitors are encouraged to visit Chanthaburi communities to explore the lifestyle of local people, natural attractions, and gems and jewelry travel routes in the province.
Therefore, local tourism businesses will offer promotional packages at special prices for accommodations, cultural and heritage tourism, and traditional local food tastings to visitors during the festival. Shuttle bus service will be provided to facilitate visitors for travelling between the venues.
“We are confident that this festival will serve as a trading platform for entrepreneurs in the gem and jewelry industry while both Thai and foreign visitors will be able to create memorable travel experiences in Chanthaburi,” Mr. Srinam concluded.
